So how many folk are have migrated to running their own #littlefedi out there in the fediverse and what are you thoughts and feelings so far?

@justine@snac.smithies.me.uk I have and so far I’m satisfied. I hope it’s stable for a few years. I’m still a bit sceptical concerning the back story of it and the use of Ai, but as it’s not a “critical” tool, I go with it for the moment.

@justine@snac.smithies.me.uk I have and I like it. The theme I am using is so cool, it reminds me of the colorway I liked from the elk client. For now, the only issue was setting up my dns entries correctly to import. and also that I might have lost the 10 posts I had haha. But since this allows me to have my own little space, it's good

@justine@snac.smithies.me.uk Mine has been running for a week now, no complaints so far! It's fast and responsive, looks great and does all I need it to do. It's also not using up very much disk space, which is one of the main reasons I wouldn't want to run Mastodon myself.

@justine@snac.smithies.me.uk I love it! Simple enough to install and maintain (so far) for a person with limited technical knowledge, light enough to run on the lowest tier of a rented VPS, and robust enough to provide me with all the Fedi stuffs I expect from a Fediverse client. Meets most of my expectations, so my wishlist for development at this point is short:

  • Allow instance admins to change instance configuration through the web dashboard. (Right now, the only way to change configuration is by editing the .toml file in terminal.)
  • A compose button that follows me around the instance rather than being limited only to the top of the Home, Federated, Local, Bubble, Bookmarks, and DM feeds. (The mobile UI has this already, except in the Catch-up feed, and I'd like to see that come to the desktop UI.)
  • Media pagination so I don't have to open and close each image in a post one at a time.

That's it! At the moment, I really can't think of anything else I need/want to perfect my experience using my littleFedi instance.

love it!!! I still have a mastodon account but this is my main instance!

@justine@snac.smithies.me.uk So far it’s been good, #LittleFedi just runs and does its thing. It’s also very economical, demanding few resources.

I’ve had some minor issues with certain iOS applications.

Given that it’s early days, littleFedi is a good solid start, and I can’t wait for future developments. 😊

@justine@snac.smithies.me.uk Yes. I'm all in on #LittleFedi. Turns out I really enjoy managing my own self hosted, single user instance. I deleted my previous Mastodon presences. Couple of minor irritations but no deal breakers

  • Tusky on Android is unreliable so I use the excellent Web UI which includes the Admin screens.
  • I can't follow folk on micro.blog, tags.pub or bsd.network. I suspect this is API incompatibility but that may improve.

The performance and low resource requirements are already covered but the LF documentation is comprehensive and excellent.

Plus we've already had one patch release so far!

@andyc @justine@snac.smithies.me.uk More things I like:

  • Writing posts in Markdown.
  • Bubbles. I created a UK focused timeline.
  • Upgrades. Simply download and drop in the new Go executable. Done.
  • Tailing the LF log file.

@justine@snac.smithies.me.uk I like it! There's a few little quirks here and there but it's only had two releases. I seem to be able to contact all networks I typically talk to without a problem.
I'm keeping my GTS and snac instances online for a while for the forseeable future, if only for backup purposes.
Snac has been very useful to have around regardless as in times when I've had to migrate and/or restore from backup snac has been the quickest to get back on line, GTS database restores have just taken a while. In theory, #littleFedi, for which I'm using SQLite, should be pretty quick to get going too - we may see at some point in the future!

I've both snac and littlefedi and littlefedi is having problems following or getting follows from yourself and other gts servers but I think it's because they're on the same external IP. My snac and littlefedi so hopefully will be ok if I totally migrate.

@justine@snac.smithies.me.uk oh, OK. I've not had those experiences myself... I have been able to follow your littlefedi instance from both my littlefedi and my GTS. Not seeing any errors in my logs for that.

The same external IP shouldn't be an issue I don't think as instances shouldn't really care about that (unless there's rate limiting I guess)
