ok, the instructions above are 100% correct, the only thing is that once the system first booted, you have only opc user and it can't login via ssh.
I had to connect as root with a serial console to set a proper password for opc user.

Now i don't have anything relevant to do , but works fine enough to fire up nginx

@luca@sironi.xyz @stefano@bsd.cafe Same setup here. Works like a dream. Given it's only 1 core, 1Gb, it's very impressive!

@luca @stefano i tried the free tier a few years ago and always got the error that no VM could be spawned at the moment. I ended up concluding it was marketing stunt, or to be more blunt, a scam.

Seeing someone actually managed to get a VM running astonishes me!

I think I did an account some years ago, to experiment, since my employer was using paid resources there.
I resurrected the account last year to give a try at #wafrn because they put a special guide to try to selfhost there, and I found it to be a great use of the free resources.

And I tried again this week for littlefedi.

What I remember is I did it in the Frankfurt region because free resources were, or are, easiest to find there.
Free vm are so called ampere a1, arm64 with 6 giga of ram an 50 giga of disk, typically with ubuntu .

@luca @stefano yeah, I had picked Marseilles for proximity, and it had basically nothing, but if I remember correctly there was no way to relocate the account after initial setup.

(I don't mind paying for occasional services, for example, I have an aws ec2 squid in the Italy/Milan region for when I want to see the italian geoblocked tv, but it's a while since Italy partecipated to soccer tournements so it's always turned off, but anyway)

I don't know how much you want to push this but, from my experience.
You can't relocate the account, you're stucked,.
Don't try to erase it and create it elsewhere, it's not worth and it's not gonna end well.

If you switch your account from freetier to pay-as-you-go PAYG (i know it sounds like a scam), and you give them your credit card which need to have at least some 100 usd available(it sounds even more like a scam, they're not taking anything, but they check the card).

Then you have much better queues to free resources in Marseilles, if any.
You can also add other regions, but the free resources are just in your home region.

You can put a 1 euro limit to send you a mail if you ever finish the free resources
(the outgoing network, but you have to have a streaming service to end it!)

As a pay for go user, I forgot my wafrn test machine turned on for a year, idle but on.

@luca @stefano I was just toying with the idea back then. I host all I need from low power devices at home, with just the backups going to some clouds. But thanks for the insights!
